Having Fun with My Father-In-Law. =)
Did you miss me?
I missed myself – true story! I set my brain down for a minute in a safe place only to forget where I placed it. After reflecting on the loss, I realized that memories are stored in the brain so by removing it, [...]
 Shane Claiborne (photo from Esquire.com)
Little over a month ago Esquire magazine published an open letter to all non-Christians from Shane Claiborne (an up and coming Christian leader). I heard about the article a few weeks ago…but just now got around to reading it.
Over all, it was pretty good.
Shane starts off with a confession:
I am sorry that so often the biggest obstacle to God has been Christians. Christians who have had so much to say with our mouths and so little to show with our lives. I am sorry that so often we have forgotten the Christ of our Christianity.
It hurts – but it is true. More often then not, those of the Church forget that Christ that ate with prostitute, leapers and the outcast. Instead, they focus on His disagreements with the Pharisees, who, btw, where the “church” of the OT.
Shane goes on: Continue reading An Open Letter From Shane Claiborne
I am more of a rock/country/pop/R&B/bluegrass/indie rock kind of guy. (yeah, I know – I’m a tad mixed up)
But yesterday my lovely bride introduced me to an a cappella competition show on NBC called “The Sing-Off”.
Wow!
It is amazing! We are not talking barbershop quartets here (well, one of the groups fall [...]
I’m not much of a basketball player – shoot, I haven’t even touched a basketball since high school Well, perhaps I’ve “touched” a basketball…but I don’t recalling “playing” basketball.
Last night when we were at the local elementary school Christmas program, I felt the Lord telling me to ask one of guys if folks ever played any pick-up games (the local LDS Ward has a small indoor court). At first I delayed asking…..coming up will kinds of excuses and reasons not to pursue the matter…….yet at the end, I asked.
To my surprise, it turns out that the men in the community have a standing Wednesday night game appointment. In fact, they were all heading down there after the Christmas program….
The moment of truth had come. Continue reading What’s that dribbling sports again? Basketball?
A month or so ago Em came home with a book about dragons. This in and of itself is not really surprising as she has done that before. Yet, this time there was a small difference.
Namely, she brought home Dragonsinger by Anne McCaffrey.
Yelp – one of the Dragon Riders of Pern books.

I was having coffee with a friend last week when they mentioned that they just finished a book about different views on hell. Intrigued, we talked a bit about the three main ways that Christians see view hell as mentioned in the Bible. Ever since then, the concept of hell has been on my mind…. And as a result, this blog post was written.
Three Main Views
It seems that within Protestantism, there are three main views on hell – or the end destination of those who choose not to follow the Living Creator God, relieved through Jesus Christ.
1) Literal View
I would guess that this is the most common view as it is the one I hear the most about. In a nutshell, proponents say that hell is a real place, where those who rejected God’s gift of grace are tormented by fire and darkness for all of eternity.
Thoughts:
This view would seem to assume that humans are in essence immortal – in that they can continue for eternity without God. However, if God is the sustainer of all life (Heb 1:3), then how can anything – human or not – continue to exist outside His presence….. noting, of course, that hell, by its very definition, is outside God presence… Continue reading Thoughts on Hell
And I can breathe now.
Granted, it wasn’t like I was lying on the ground grasping for oxygen… nope…instead, I was lying on the ground crying like a little baby caught in a viper pit with a rain storm coming.
Or at least – that’s the way I felt remember it.
But now, it [...]
I have to handed it to the NakedPastor – he hit this nail on the head in more ways then one.

The coast of Japan has been invaded by huge 450 lb Nomura’s Jellyfish that can grow up to seven feet wide.
And there are thousands of them!
So many, in fact, that they have all but stopped the fishing industry. Shoot, 10-tonne Japanese trawler was recently capsized by the gigantic jellyfish!
For myself – I just love the pictures!
There is something….I don’t know….strange, and other worldly about giant jellyfish that just gets to me (in a good way). In high school, I painted a large 3’x2’ watercolor of a Portuguese Man O’ War (I wonder if I still have that old painting…..) Continue reading Jellyfish – By The Ton!
How do you like the title of this blog post? Did it grab your attention? Well, it is the title of a recent news article published online by The Atlantic.
Needless to say, I read the article – which was really good, even if it was a tad long. In fact, I would recommend everyone reading it as it gives an interesting view on how Christianity is perceived by outsiders.
However, for those who don’t have the time or the will to read the article – allow me to summarize the writer’s (Hanna Rosin) thesis:
Prosperity theology within Christianity has caused a “shift in the American conception of divine Providence and its relationship to wealth” – to the point that individuals/families who held this theological view made unwise financial choices based upon the feeling that God wanted to bless them.
Now – before you break out the tar, hear this out.
I know that sometimes God will ‘bless’ His children with financial wealth. However, I also know that Jesus warns His followers from placing too much hope, credit or value on financial wealth. Continue reading Did Christianity Cause the [Financial] Crash?

Who Writes This Mess? My name is Joshua Hopping and I am a Son of the Most High journeying through a foreign land following the Wild Goose (i.e. the Holy Spirit) one step at a time.
As I journey along the Way, I have the privilege of serving as the bi-vocational pastor of the Payette River Vineyard Christian Fellowship. I am also a voracious reader who loves studying church history, theology, and world missions.
This blog, "Requisite Danger", is a record of what God is teaching and showing me as I try to follow Him wherever He leads as well as occasional random thoughts. I pray that you will join me in this journey through online/offline interaction as this life is lived in community.
May His grace and peace be upon you.
